I am Andrés Cajiao. Co-Founder and CEO at Emilia.
28 years ago two things happened:
I was born, and my grandma opened the doors to her first restaurant.
A menu of typical dishes from my home country, the taste of home.
As any family-owned small business, everyone had their chance of working at her restaurant.
I too had my own taste of the restaurant hustle… Bussing tables at age 8 for pocket money - ha!
Fast-forward 20 years later I was exiting my prior company, an AI assistant for talent recruiting. Having built an AI company for 7 years, raised $25 Million Dollars to build it, led hundreds of people, and helped over a thousand companies connect with over a million candidates on my platform, I was ready for my next challenge.
I was thinking… What change do I want to drive in the world?
It was then that a mentor of mine gave me a great piece of advice:
If you were to wake up every day to work for a kind of person for the next 10 years, who would you like that person to be?
The answer was always there, but I wasn't seeing it yet.
It took me two years to get my answer…
And it came in the form of a family tragedy…
One day, my grandma woke up to terrible news:
Her restaurant manager had left her…
To open a restaurant and compete with her…
and she had taken all the money the restaurant had in the bank…
My grandma had to jump back into the ship, and as I saw the whole story unfold, I started to see how hard she had to work just to keep the lights running.
She had to take money from my inheritance fund just to keep the restaurant afloat… It was devastating to her.
I told her "Grandma, I don't need your money, I need you to enjoy your remaining years alive" and made it my personal commitment to help her, and people just like her, as my next endeavor.
You can imagine her stress running the restaurant…
